Aside from my love for writing, I started this blog because I felt like my life lacked creative freedom. I was going into work each day, seeing the same people, and making small talk. All of this became really repetitive and emotionally draining. I began to dislike my work environment which caused a lot of stress and anxiety. I finally decided that I did not want to feel like this anymore. Here are my tips for getting out of a work rut.
Is this my dream job? No, not at all. For now, my job allows me to pay my student loans, buy gas, groceries, and for that I am grateful. I still live at home, and I am fortunate enough to not have to pay rent, thanks, mom!
At first, I thought the solution was to look for a new job. Don’t get me wrong, I am actively looking, but the job market is hard especially now since Ms. Rona hit us like a ton of bricks. I figured while I am searching for a fulfilling job, I should make the most of the position I’m in.

Identify the issue
Think about what could be causing this rut, and when did you start feeling this way? Did you get a bad review? Do you need a change of scenery? Did your work bestie move on to another job opportunity? Whatever the reason is, you have to identify the issue before you can resolve it. The cause of your rut could be completely unrelated to work. You may have to dig deeper within yourself to get to the root of the problem.
Switch up your Commute
Instead of thinking about how much you dislike your job, try changing up your routine. This can start with your commute. Feed your mind with an insightful podcast, or one that makes you laugh. Listening to a podcast on your way to work can instantly shift your mood and mindset. There are so many great podcasts out there ranging from different topics and categories.
Prioritize what’s important
When working in a high-stress environment you can often feel overwhelmed and not know where to start first. Try focusing on prioritizing the most important tasks first, create some type of strategy at work. When I was in college I struggled with this because everything was due at once. I found that dividing my assignments into sections was the most effective. I apply this same technique at work and in everyday life.
Take some personal time
Balancing work life and your personal life is so important. If you’ve been working nonstop, and haven’t taken any personal days that could put you in a rut. Request time off, and do something you enjoy. Even if you can’t take a full vacation, plan a weekend getaway with friends. Sleep all day if you want. My ideal day off is curling up on the couch and binge-watching my TV series. Get active and take a walk or jog with friends. Do whatever your little heart desires. When you come back to work, you will hopefully be well-rested and feeling refreshed.

Eat lunch away from your desk
I know this seems so simple, but stepping away from work for just an hour can be beneficial. You deserve that hour of silence to yourself. Get out of the office and get some fresh air. Enjoy an hour away from work with your favorite co-workers. Don’t discuss anything regarding work or deadlines for that entire hour.
Find a creative outlet or side hustle
So you work a nine-to-five to be able to pay the bills and provide yourself. You clearly aren’t too thrilled about your job or you wouldn’t be reading this. Consider turning your passion into a side hustle. A side hustle can fuel your passion and eventually turn into your full-time job. If you really want to reduce stress find a hobby that takes your mind off your everyday life and feeds your soul.
Bonus Tip
One of my best friends mentioned this to me the other day. She said enjoy the season that you are currently in. Don’t be in a rush to leave a situation and try to think about what you can gain from this. Something better is always around the corner, and new doors open up when you least expect it. Trust me, I know it is hard to think about the positive all the time, but it gets easier.
Take Control
I encourage you to come up with some of your own ideas and do what works best for you. I also encourage you to not allow yourself to stay stuck in a rut. Things won’t get better if you don’t take the steps to improve your situation. Self-love is the best love!
What are some ways that help you get out of a rut at work or in general?
