When you purchase new skincare products it can be tempting to try them all at once. If you are someone with sensitive skin like myself, I would not do this. I repeat, do not do this.
Sticking to skincare products that work is the safest way to go, but that’s absolutely no fun for us skincare hoarders.
Introducing new products into your skincare routine can be scary, but taking them for a test run will prevent a massive breakout or a possible allergic reaction on your entire face. Try these four things before you introduce new products into your skincare routine.
Choosing The Right Products
This is the most important step, and will save you a lot of time. Think about what your skin needs and your skin type.
Is it dry or oily? Do you have acne or acne scarring? If you are not sure what skin type you have click here. Once you’ve figured that out you can begin to create the proper skincare routine and build your collection with products specifically for your skin type.
Choosing the wrong products could result in excess oil production or dehydrated skin.
Imagine spending $40+ on a product and it doesn’t end up working out for you. Skincare is an investment, and nobody has time to waste money. Thank goodness for return policies lol.
Read Reviews
Before you go to a new restaurant, you may look at Yelp to see if it’s worth your time. The same thing can be applied when testing out new skincare products.
Chances are someone has already tried the product that you’re interested in and has a valuable opinion. I normally read the reviews straight from the product website. You can also look to YouTube or blogs for more in-depth reviews and product demos.
Patch Test
What is patch testing you ask? Great question, I recently found out what patch testing meant. When it comes to introducing new skincare or even makeup a patch test is your best friend.
Apply the product to an area of your skin that isn’t visible like behind your ear. This will determine if you are allergic to a product without causing irritation to your entire face.
Try Samples
So, you’ve read all the reviews, blogs and YouTube videos the internet has to offer. It’s time to try this product for real.
There’s just one thing standing in your way…the price tag. Like I said skincare is quite the investment and you want to make sure you’re investing in the very best.
Go to your local Sephora or Ulta and ask for a sample that will last you a few weeks. In order to really know if a new skincare product works, you’ll have to wait a few weeks to see some real results depending on the product. It’s always better to try before you buy.
One Product at a Time
I actually just bought three new products and I was so excited to try them that I used them all at once. It didn’t go well for me, the next morning I woke up with what felt like a million tiny bumps all over my face.
Thankfully, I am not allergic to any of them, but my skin couldn’t handle all of that change at once.
The moral of the story is to introduce new products gradually. If you do what I did you won’t be able to pinpoint which product you could be allergic to. Once your skin has adjusted to something new, you can add another product.
Products for Sensitive Skin:
If you are thinking of introducing new skincare into your routine, I would first go with something that has simple ingredients. Sephora makes it super easy to find clean products in-store and online.
Cleansers:
Moisturizers:
Final Takeaways:
Adding new skincare products into your routine should be fun, but approached with caution lol. It is okay to stick to the same products, but it is also cool to switch things up. With that being said, don’t be afraid to try new products. Don’t go in blind, know all the facts before you try something new.
